We are delighted to have been granted licences to conduct Great-crested Newt (GCN) surveys, thus extending the portfolio of services that we can offer our clients. This newt is the most highly protected amphibian in Britain and one of the most secretive in its habits, so it can take a range of survey techniques to detect its presence or to confirm its absence. Further techniques need to be employed to assess the size of any GCN population and thus to determine the most appropriate mitigation measures to protect them from harm during development projects, as well as enabling the client to demonstrate that best practices have been followed throughout his project.
The award follows a series of guided and self-taught courses as well as the completion of a number of supervised surveys and assessments, and we are grateful to Richard Green Ecology Ltd and Rob Jones, of Bridgend County Borough Council, for their valuable assistance in these respects. We greatly enjoyed the training sessions at Braunton Burrows, Devon, and Llanilid, south Wales, despite many late nights and early mornings, and were also thrilled to encounter the very evasive Sand Lizard during a couple of our Devon excursions.
We look forward to helping developers and project managers in the future.
