A double celebration this month – firstly, on becoming an Associate member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and secondly, on the fourth anniversary of the launch of JP Ecological Services, my ecological survey company.
I was recently delighted to receive confirmation of my CIEEM application, as a reflection of the professional education, training and experience gained over the past 10 or so years, and hope that my continuing development will soon enable me to qualify for the next level of membership. This achievement complements the earlier acquisition of a great-crested newt survey licence from Natural Resources Wales.
The fourth year of JP Ecological Services has seen significant growth and included a large number of differing projects, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Habitat surveys, Desk studies, Protected Species surveys (including badger, bats, dormouse and great-crested newts), Ecological Impact Assessments, mitigation advice and Biodiversity Net Gain proposals and management plans. I have also been pleased to be able to help contractors to protect wildlife whilst engaged in on-site project work.
Throughout the year, customers have varied in size from individuals wishing to modify existing buildings or to submit applications for adoption of areas in Local Development Plans through to large organisations, including Bridgend County Borough Council, Dragonwood Studios, the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Welsh Water and West Midlands Safari Park, where I have worked alongside planning organisations such as Cogeo Planning and Environmental Services and Spectrum Ecology with car park plans, renewable energy installations, new film set locations and larger housing developments.
