Our Work

We have completed a wide range of ecological surveys and provided management plans, mitigation and biodiversity net gain advice for customers including water companies, councils, housing developers, film studios, planning agencies, ecologists and private individuals.

Although many projects have been in south Wales, our work has taken us to mid and north Wales as well as into England. For information on the range and geographical spread of the projects we have undertaken, please see the map below.

Our Case Study links illustrate how various surveys and investigations have dove-tailed together to help development teams progress their projects.

We also include a list of articles, we have produced as a result of our research and which provide information and perhaps even inspiration on the ecological aspects of development, as well as a summary of our involvement in some international work.

If you would like to discuss the ecological support that we could provide to your development proposals, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Ecological Articles

Our continuing research into ecological matters has resulted in a range of articles which you might like to browse through. Some favourites and our most recent articles are also listed below:

International Projects

In addition to our UK-based projects, we have greatly enjoyed supporting various surveys and projects overseas.

American Black Bear
American Black bear

Project in collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

  • Locating dens in deep-snow-covered countryside and recording data on den construction.
  • Sedating the hibernating adult inhabitants, re-fitting tracking collars, collecting full biometric data, blood and hair samples, ECG and heart ultrasound data.
  • Taking a full set of biometric data from each cub present in the den.
  • Analysing blood and hair samples in the field station.
Borneo Butterflies

Preliminary assessment of impact of palm-oil plantation on diversity and the abundance of 5 families of butterflies in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

  • Vegetation surveys undertaken within the plantation, adjacent undisturbed forest and buffer zones.
  • Butterfly species and abundance recorded.
  • Data showed significant reductions in diversity and abundance in the buffer-zone and plantation compared to the forest.
  • Recommendations made for more detailed studies.
Hydrology Investigation – Portugal

Project to review earlier results obtained at Ria Formosa Lagoon, Portugal. Assessed:

  • EUNIS Habitat Classification of the Park Natural Da Ria Formosa.
  • Changes in flow velocity, rate and direction during tidal influx.
  • Profile of water depth in the lagoon during tidal influx.
  • Changes in the temperature and chemical profile of lagoon water caused by the inflowing sea water.
Borneo Coral Reefs

Preliminary surveys utilising a submersible sub-aqua rover to complete

  • Quantitative assessments of benthic habitat components.
  • Assessments of the diversity, abundance and distribution of corals, fish and other marine megafauna.
  • Investigation into whether limited levels of artificial UV light instigated a behavioural response from different types of coral.
  • Assessment of the levels of UV light absorbed and reflected by different types of coral in various life stages at differing depths.
